Economic stimulus package dangerous in an election year

Relief will be welcome. ...On the Net: http://www.miamiherald.com/Jan. 21The Jerusalem Post, on Hamas:Yesterday, External Relations European Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said: "I condemn the rocket fire into Israel and we fully understand Israel's need to defend its citizens." But she also accused Israel of causing "blackouts in parts of Gaza, affecting both homes and hospitals. Closing the crossings will also result in shortages of food, medical and relief items. ... I am against this collective punishment of the people of Gaza."It would be nice if the international press and the governments that blindly took their cues from it would take a moment to consider that their Pavlovian embrace of the manufactured "humanitarian crisis" in Gaza could lead, at best, to prolonging the suffering of Gazans and Israelis and, at worst, to full blown war.

Twinkies maker Interstate Bakeries submits amended reorganization plan

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -

Interstate Bakeries Corp., the maker of Hostess Twinkies and Wonder Bread, has submitted a revised reorganization plan that pays unsecured creditors about 30 percent of what they're owed and gives shareholders nothing.

Secured creditors and the company's lenders will receive the full value of their claims through the issuance of new stock, Interstate Bakeries said in bankruptcy court documents filed late Friday and disclosed in a securities filing Monday.

Kansas City-based Interstate Bakeries has been in bankruptcy since September 2004.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Jerry Venters is scheduled to consider the company's plan during a hearing Tuesday and decide whether to allow the company to begin seeking creditor approval.

The plan calls for specialist lender Silver Point Finance LLC to provide $400 million in post-bankruptcy funding.

There simply is no such thing.
